What is Mother?
Mother is a private AI computer. Models, your working files, and Genesis — Mother's AI workspace — run together on one managed machine, so your work can stay local and private by default. External services (cloud model providers, web-connected tools, software updates) use the internet only when you enable and configure them.
The product in one paragraph
A Mother computer runs Mother OS, hosts local models with its own worker runtime, organizes your projects and files, and gives you Genesis for direct collaboration or multi-step outcomes. You can use it from the built-in desktop, from a Mac client, or programmatically through an OpenAI-compatible API. Everything — inference, files, search, media generation — happens on the machine unless you connect an external service.
Core concepts
| Concept | What it means |
|---|---|
| Mother (the computer) | The physical machine — custom hardware running Mother OS. |
| Mother OS | The operating system: signed updates, local service runtime, model management. |
| Genesis | The AI workspace: sessions with models, tools, skills, projects, and files. |
| Owner | The administrator. Manages accounts, API keys, models, and system settings. |
| User | Any signed-in person working in Genesis. |
| Project | A scoped workspace for files, knowledge, and settings tied to your work. |
| Worker | The runtime that loads and serves models (chat, image, video, speech). |
What you can do with it
- Chat and collaborate in Genesis with local or cloud models.
- Run agents and skills: computer use, browser use, web search, and file work — each with explicit permissions.
- Generate media: image, video, and speech generation run on local workers.
- Bring your own models: add custom model containers alongside the preloaded catalog.
- Integrate: give your own tools access through API keys and the OpenAI-compatible API.
Where to go next
- Getting started — set up the machine, create the first Owner account.
- Inference — how models run, and how to use the APIs.
- Genesis — sessions, projects, tools, and skills.
- Deploy — custom models and containers.
